Shared Parental Leave and Pay

Shared Parental Leave and Pay

Current rate of statutory shared parental pay

The current rate of statutory shared parental pay is £151.97 per week from 4th April 2021 (or 90% of average weekly earnings if less).

Shared parental leave is a relatively new right which enables eligible mothers or adopters and their partners to choose to share time off work between them after their child is born or placed with them for adoption. The regulations that brought shared parental leave into law came into force on 1st December 2014 in respect of parents of babies due (or children placed for adoption) on or after 5th April 2015.

Despite the confusingly similar terminology, shared parental leave is entirely separate from the entitlement to take ‘parental leave’ (which is a right to take periods of unpaid time off work to look after a child up to the child’s 18th birthday). Separate information is available on this right.

Shared parental leave entitlements are also distinct from maternity, adoption and paternity leave entitlements, albeit there can be an interrelationship between them.
