The rights and benefits available to pregnant women are outlined within employment legislation spanning a number of years: from the Sex Discrimination Act 1975 (now repealed and replaced by the Equality Act 2010) to the Employment Rights Act 1996, Work & Families Act 2006, and a variety of statutory instruments in the intervening years and ongoing. In many schools and colleges these statutory rights are enhanced by an occupational maternity pay scheme, either locally determined or derived from a collective agreement.
Our guidance and information section includes a comprehensive downloadable guide to maternity leave and pay rights with appendices covering the Burgundy Book (school teachers) and Green Book (support staff) schemes.
Template letters, a notification form, risk assessment checklist and maternity dates calculator can be found in our templates and tools whilst some commonly-asked questions on this topic area are available within our FAQs.
